Lutropin alfa (trade name Luveris), the recombinant LH, can be used in infertility therapy to stimulate follicular development in IVF therapy. Luteinizing hormone (LH, lutropin, lutrophin, interstitial cell-stimulating hormone or ICSH in males), produced by gonadotroph cells in the anterior pituitary gland, triggers ovulation and development of the corpus luteum in females and stimulates Leydig cell production of testosterone in males. The structure of LH is similar to those of Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). The protein dimer contains 2 polypeptide units, named as alpha and beta subunits. The alpha subunits of LH, FSH, TSH, and hCG are identical, containing 92 amino acids. Their beta subunits vary. The LH beta subunit (LHB) with 120 amino acids is responsible for the specific interaction with the LH receptor. Because an amino acid sequence in LHB shares large homologies with that in the beta subunit of hCG, both LH and hCG stimulate the same receptor. Because of the different composition of their sugar moieties in their beta subunits, the biologic half-life of LH is 20 minutes only, much shorter than that of FSH (3–4 hours) and hCG (24 hours). LH acts synergistically with FSH.
