Introduction
Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is a member of the neurotrophin family. Along with other structurally related neurotrophic factors NGF, NT-3 and NT-4, BDNF binds with high affinity to the TrkB kinase receptor. It also binds with the LNGFR (for low-affinity nerve growth factor receptor, also known as p75). BDNF promotes the survival, growth and differentiation of neurons. It serves as a major regulator of synaptic transmission and plasticity at adult synapses in many regions of the CNS. BDNF expression is altered in neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease.

A homodimer, non-glycosylated, polypeptide chain containing 2 x 119 amino acids and having a total molecular mass of 26,984 Dalton.
The ED50, calculated by the dose-dependant induction of ACHE (acetylcholine esterase) in rat basal forebrain primary septal culture is 50 ng/ml corresponding to a Specific Activity of 20,000 IU/mg.
Purity: > 97% by SDS-PAGE and RP-HPLC.
Formulation: The protein was lyophilized without any additives.
Reconstitution: It is recommended to reconstitute the lyophilized Brain-derived Neurotrophic Factor in sterile 18 M?-cm H2O not less than 100 ug/ml, which can then be further diluted to other aqueous solutions.
