Type I interferons directly inhibit regulatory T cells to allow optimal antiviral T cell responses during acute LCMV infection.

For IL-2, ICOSL, and B7-1/B7-2 blockade, recipient mice were injected intraperitoneally with a mixture of 100 µg anti–IL-2 (JES6; BioXCell) and 100 µg anti-IL-2 (S4B61; BioXCell), with 100 µg anti-ICOSL (HK5.3; BioXCell), with a mixture of 100 µg anti–B7-1 (16-10A1; BioXCell) and 100 µg anti–B7-1 (GL-1; BioXCell), or with 100 µg rat IgG (Sigma-Aldrich) before T reg cell transfer (day −1) and every 2 d thereafter. ...Fractions of spleens (<5 mg) and sorted cells were stabilized in RNALater. ...All data are presented as the mean values ± SEM. Statistical significance was determined by one-way ANOVA with Tukey’s post-test, two-tailed unpaired Student’s t test, or two-tailed paired Student’s t test as indicated in figure legends. ...We wish to thank K. Arumuganathan for assistance in flow cytometry and cell sorting, Dr. Alexander Rudensky for providing Foxp3GFP and Foxp3DTR mice, Drs. ...Division index was calculated from CPDye dilution profiles using FlowJo software (Tree Star).

Late engagement of CD86 after influenza virus clearance promotes recovery in a FoxP3+ regulatory T cell dependent manner.
Moser, E. K., et al. PLoS Pathog. 2014 Aug 21;10(8):e1004315. doi: 10.1371/journal.ppat.1004315. PMID: 25144228
Early in IAV infection, the co-stimulatory molecules CD80 and CD86 promote inflammation through triggering IAV-specific T cell responses, but no role for CD80/86 in recovery after virus clearance has been previously established. ...By in vivo antibody-mediated blockade of CD80 or CD86 after virus clearance, we found that engagement of CD86 (but not CD80) was required for optimal recovery after influenza infection. ...CD86 and CD80 are members of the B7 family serving as co-stimulatory molecules. ...In contrast, disruption of CD80/86 signaling to receptors on T cells after effector T cell generation dramatically reduces IAV-specific T cell effector activity in the respiratory tract (e.g. cytokine production and proliferation) but does not impact virus clearance or morbidity of mice. ...Importantly, although the ligand function of CD86 and CD80 demonstrates significant overlap, these two co-stimulatory molecules have been demonstrated to perform distinct roles under certain conditions.
