Description

Introduction:
Sialidase-1, also known as Acetylneuraminyl hydrolase, G9 sialidase, Lysosomal sialidase, N-acetyl-alpha-neuraminidase 1, NEU1 and NANH, belongs to the N-acetyl-a neuraminidase family. NEU1 is expressed in many tissues, highly in pancreas, weakly in brain. NEU1 is a lysosomal enzyme, which cleaves terminal sialic acid residues from substrates such as glycoproteins and glycolipids. Deficiencies in the human enzyme NEU1 leads to sialidosis, a rare lysosomal storage disease. NEU1 has been shown to interact with cathepsin A (protective protein), beta-galactosidase and N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfate sulfatase in a multienzyme complex.
