Introduction
Neuronal acetylcholine receptor subunit alpha-5, also known as CHRNA5 and NACHRA5, belongs to ligand-gated ion channel family. Neuronal AChR is composed of two different type of subunits: alpha and non-alpha. CHRNA5 binding to acetylcholine, the AChR responds by an extensive change in conformation that affects all subunits, leading to the opening of an ion-conducting channel across the plasma membrane. Genetic variations in CHRNA5 have been related to susceptibility to smoking-related behavioral traits and lung cancer, contributing to the smoking quantitative trait locus 3.
