Introduction
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of zinc and calcium dependent endo-peptidases which degrade components of the extracellular matrix (ECM). MMP-12 (macrophage elastase) is found in macrophages and its expression can be induced by cytokines. MMP 12 plays essential roles in various physiological processes and pathological processes. MMP-12 is responsible for cleavage of plasminogen to angiotensin, which has an angiostatic effect. It may be part in tissue injury and remodeling and has significant elastolytic activity. MMP-12 is related to the pathogenesis of aortic aneurysms and in the development of pulmonary emphysema MMP-12 is a potent proinflammatory and oncogenic molecule MMP-12 up-regulation plays a critical role in emphysema to lung cancer transition that is facilitated by inflammation.
