Description

Introduction
Leukocyte cell-derived chemotaxin 1, also known as CHMI, MYETS1 and LECT1, is a glycosylated transmembrane protein which belongs to the chondromodulin-1 family. LECT1 contains one BRICHOS domain, is cleaved to form a mature, secreted protein. LECT1 is bifunctional growth regulator that stimulates the growth of cultured chondrocytes in the presence of basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF), but inhibits the growth of cultured vascular endothelial cells. LECT1 is expressed in the avascular zone of prehypertrophic cartilage and its expression decreases during chondrocyte hypertrophy and vascular invasion. LECT1 may play a role in endochondral bone development by permitting cartilaginous anlagen to be vascularized and replaced by bone. LECT1 also can be involved in the broad control of tissue vascularization during development.
