Ovidrel, the first fertility drug containing recombinant human chorionic gonadotropin (rhCG), is used in women undergoing assisted reproductive techniques such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF). Its applications include induction of final follicle maturity and early luteinization in infertile women who have been pretreated with FSH medications as part of an assisted reproductive technology program (ART), and induction of ovulation and pregnancy in anovulatory infertile women in whom the cause of infertility is functional and not due to primary ovarian failure.
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone produced by the syncytiotrophoblast, is a component of the fertilized egg after conception. Following implantation, the syncytiotrophoblast gives rise to the placenta. Some cancerous tumors produce this hormone; therefore, elevated levels measured when the patient is not pregnant can lead to a cancer diagnosis. However, it is not known whether this production is a contributing cause or an effect of tumorigenesis. The pituitary analog of hCG, known as luteinizing hormone (LH), is produced in the pituitary gland of males and females of all ages.
